The purpose of this study was to examine the processes of ideological transformation in Kim, Il-yeop’s literary work that bears significance on the history of Korean modern literature, and to analyze, in particular, the implication of the author’s acceptance of Buddhist ideologies.
Kim debuted in the Korean literary society of the time through her writing activities that reflected the trends in women’s liberation movement as she founded Sin Yeo Ja (New Women) magazine. But her feminist ideology was viewed not entirely systematic.
Later, Kim pursued theories of self-directed liberation and redemption following Lim No-wol, who advocated L'art pour l'art (art for art’s sake) based on his own ideas of "Neo Individualism." The theories Kim studied are well represented by her novels and prose writings.
As she familiarized herself with Buddhism, Kim, Il-yeop stumbled on theories that broke and transcended the boundaries of the self, something in opposition of Lim’s self-directed ideas, and subsequently began her own pursuit of a new kind of liberation and redemption.
Kim, who searched for women’s liberation and redemption based on a rather unstable individualistic ideology of self amidst the new era of in Korean history, considered practicing Korean Zen Buddhism as a way to resolve all problems resulting from her chosen path in the literary world in a higher level.
The scope of her literary repercussions, as wide as that of her difficult personal life, challenges the usual statements made about her literary status as one of the critical new woman writers in the 1920’s. There is more to her significance than we know.
A comprehensive approach to Kim, Il-yeop’s literature as well as her life not only provides a new perspective, based on the development of women’s literature, from which we can understand the history of Korea’s early modern literature but also enriches discussions that investigate the concept of the individualistic self presupposed in the early modern literature. Such an approach is believed to help investigate the spiritual basis of Korea’s early modern literature.
