The study of the march 1st Movement was conducted in various ways, but it was not addressed in depth how it affected the participants, the nature of the 3.1 movement’s experience, or how the experience affected the people of the time. In particular, fewer studies have been done about the March 1 Movement and women. Until now, it has been a general view that f irst-generation f emale writers were negatively viewed compared to female writers in the 1930s. First-generation female writers need to be more noticed and are meaningful not just because they are women, but because they are part of the “Youth Generation,” a symbol of the change of the times, that is mentally awakening by passing the historic event of the March 1 Movement. Their 3.1 movement’s experience is often briefly mentioned or simplified in context, and they often remain in a narrow understanding, which needs to be explored more deeply by looking at the circumstances of the time, people’s perceptions of reality.
The “Youth,” which received attention on the occasion of 3.1, was often limitedto men, young women were marginalized and their ideas and literature were also poorly understood or distorted.
To find examples of that, this study examined Kim Il-yup’s discourse and literature. Kim Il-yup participated in the March 1st Independence Movement and published a magazine called ’New Woman’ in the light of the subsequent changes in the times.
What was expressed in Kim Il-yup’s writings at the time was the fierce challenge and grope to explore the possibility of change by self-innovation, reconstruction, and self-discipline. For Kim Il-yup, free love and the Joseon Buddhist Youth Movement were ways of mental awakening and social changes. Her literary and life goals were to counteract the prejudices of society and reform people’s consciousness.
