Na, Hye-seok(l800~1948) introduced the western painting to her country earlier than any other women painter in Korea and was well known as a literary woman writing works of various genres including poetry, novel, essay, and drama etc.
Na, Hye-seok fell in love with a {ret named So-wol (His real name was Choi, Seung-goo) when studying in Japan, but she failed to marry due to the death of her lover. Afterwards she came to make friends with a lot of liberal writers and artists. In such a course she came to meet another gentleman called Kim, Woo-young and succeeded in marrying him Before her marriage she confessed all her past to her fiance and proposed he put the poetical monument of her old lover's at the cost of their honeymoon. Her new lover agreed to do it with pleasure and kept his promise after marriage.
These experience and facts showed that she was a liberalist by nature. Her husband, Mr. Kim was very generous to understand and consider her carefully. They took a journey to Europe arm in arm but came back home separately. While her husband stayed in German, she visited Paris to meet another gentleman Choi, Rin and enjoyed herself with him At last this event came to be known to other Koreans and caused her to get divorced from him. They put their happy and ordinary life into an end It was ten years since they had married, and she had been an object of social contempt from then on.
Regardless of her marriage, she lived her own liberal life as a writer as well as an artist and left not a few works after her death. Fortunately she had a good reputation in the world of fine arts. However her literature works has been paid little attention to in the world of literature. Recently some critics and scholar began to investigate and study on her life and works, which helps her name to be known to the public. Especially her novels and life began to be evaluated as the basis of Korean feminism movement, for she had had much interest in women's right and stressed the equality between man and woman. Even if she had been influenced by Japanese Woman Movement, she was more progressive and practical than those who had an effect on her.
In spite of these opening eyes to feminism, she didn't find a co-worker and failed to set the movement in the right direction. She didn't concentrate her attention on Feminism Movement and remained to assert her opinion in a plenty of works and sections. It led her to need various genres. She didn't get to the higher step of. feminism and exposed her amateurism Despite her limit she must have put the cornerstone in Korean feminism movement and can be put above all feminists in those days as a woman pioneer.
