Museums today live through an intense and renewed dialogue among themselves and with their visitors and the interwoven communication of cultural and historical background arouse vital interest of the people and the nations. In this connection, we must change our concept and idea about museum functions and exihibition techniques. For the effective goal of this function it will be a good scheme to start with a folk museum.
Fortunately the folk culture is every where in Korea and we are surrounded by relics of the past wherever we go. This treasure of the past often conficts with modern culture. The functions of folk museum today are diverse as an intensive institution, study center of nationology archives, exhibition classroom, and center of knowledge and information. Folk museum also attempt at practical activities and involvement in folk culture and the idea of studying rural population.
The folk museum should exhibit objects and themes that illustrate the life and value of the common people. It should have an entirely new philosophy for exhibition; The exhibition should show the cultural context of a theme, rather than mere presentation of individual and separte objects such methods as interior of reconstructed culture. diorama with panoramic views, minature stagings, and audio visual aids should be stressed.
In the long term, the aim of Folk Museum in Korea is far greater to illustrate the history of civilization in close association with the world culture. Korea has no world reknowned ethnological museum like the Smithsonian Institution, Skansen, American Museum of Natural History, Denmark National Museum or the British Museum. But she has a great deal of cultural properties about 270,000 rregistered items. Common to all of them is that they are supported by a broad popular interest and they share the tradition of commom people. They will make a fascinating cultural history museum which evokes inspiration and ideas and diffuses knowledge and information and help the people to rediscover where they come from and what they are.
But it needs time, funds and museum man power and it is hardly sweet music to the ears of fund-allocating authorities.
Folk museum must have new slongans ; here are the root for you and old bygones that will serve as classroom of all the people searching their past, present and future. Museums die if their staffs and visitors can no longer see any meaning in their institutions, no matter how well stalled or funded. To become mausoleum or become living culture center that is the question for museum man today.
