Recently it has been said that as a museum unearths, preserves, and displays the material remains of our cultural heritage, missions that can be viewed essentially as educational, it plays a role as a cultural facility for the general public, performing functions that converge into education. In addition, since most museums focus on "potential visitors and existing visitors who are to visit continually"in order to attract more visitors, it is reasonable that they attempt to add an educational function in an attempt to increase attendance.
This paper sets out to explore the diversification of museums' educational function, which is one of the many roles that museums have played, by looking at related theories, surveys of the present status of museums, and questionnaires of domestic and overseas museums.
In short, the above indices reveal that the educational component in domestic museums is still in the beginning stages. In advanced museums, including those in the U.S., museum educational programs cooperating with educational institutions have become diversified and specialized, and museums have come to be regarded as one of the most important and practical centers for learning; thus, the diverse function of museums has been recognized. Studies of the present status of domestic museums reveal that most museums work within the parameters of art education and history education, both of which are based on social studies, and also show that visitors still don't maintain specific recognition of museums as important educational institutions and centers of learning.
Nonetheless, a noteworthy point is that although questionnaires reveal that the educational component of domestic museums is still in its beginning stages, the answers given by visitors show that they do in fact regard museums as educational institutions, demonstrating that the definitely recognize "the educational function of museums,"
At the same time, questionnaires show that half of the respondents who had not participated in any museum educational programs expect to receive the complex benefits that a museum educational programs gives, meaning that many respondents with little understanding of museums'
educational function and programs nevertheless recognize that the basic function of a museum is "education;" specifically, they already recognized that their visit had enhanced their education in social sciences, the arts, and history.
