The object of this paper is to examine Taoist influence on korean folk custom The common theme of many phenomena of Taoism is to accomplish Tao, namely to attain the stage of Shinshun(Immortals).
Before taoism was introduced from China, yearning for Shinshun widely influenced on korean traditional thoughts. After Chinese thought of Shinshun was introduced, it seems that these two elements was fused into one. Shinshun was utilized as an important subject of not only literary works of the intellectuals but also folklores. Both Shinshun and the world of Shinshun were the ideal objects of popular people.
Taoism has developed many methods of nourishing life. Taoist methods of nourishing life played an important role of wisdom for keeping one's health in company with oriental traditional medicine. Concrete contents are as follows; moderate ordinary life, deliberate care of health, wise sexual life, and various kinds of athletic methods. Futhermore many kinds of popular remedies were influenced directly and indirectly by taoist methods of nourishing life.
Believing in many taoist gods had a great effect on popular beliefs, especially korean shamanism Chinese taoism accepted almost chinese popular beliefs. Because any taoist religious order was not built in korean history, we can find taoist gods mainly in popular beliefs.
Taoism endeavored to develop many religious techniques for driving back evil gods and praying for helping of good gods. Specially taoist charms and incantations had great effects on popular beliefs of Korea. Besides taoist customs of preventing evil gods and avoiding misfortunes had great effects on folk customs. Otherwise taoist astronomy, fengshui and various techniques of prophecy also widely influenced on popular living forms.
