This paper is a study on Si(詩), Bu(賦), Myeong(銘) to understand How Taoism appears and what it means in Nammyeong(南冥)’s literature.
‘Sinmyeongsado(神明舍圖)’ is a picture which shows how to train human nature according to a theory of ‘Chamdonggyae(參同契)’. ‘Inigido(人理氣圖)’ is a picture which shows the way of training mind and body under environment, and it is based on a theory of ‘Hwangjeonggyeong(黃庭經)’.
Training human nature is for recovering the original nature. Literature of training human nature includes recovering nature as controling feelings and controling feelings as training nature. The former is sometimes shown as a figure of Nammyeong strolling like a Taoist hermit with super natural powers in a poem or talking about Taoist wisdom as reading Taoist scripture against temptation. The other is expressed as Nammyeong training nature and then recovering the original nature in Bu and Myeong.
Training mind and body is for protecting it against environment. Literature of training mind and body includes the way of preserving mind as taking care of body and the way of preserving body as preserving one’s mind. The former is shown as a figure that he takes medicine and takes care of his health in Si and Bu. The other is expressed as a figure of his being lost in meditation and living like a Taoist hermit in a Utopia, or a figure of holding a Taoist ceremony with concentration in a poem.
There is a figure of Taoist training and a trace of trying to live a Taoist life in Nammyeong’s literature. But there is no choice but to has a limit for him as a Taoist, because he always had a realistic duty as a Confucianist.
