Women divers in Jeju island are so famous that the world pays attention to them, because they dive into the sea for sea weed. With this special diving skills called 'Najameubub', they pick seaweed from the 20 meters under the sea for two minutes.
Women divers are exist only in Korea and Japan around Jaeju island. Nowadays, the numbers are about 20,000 in Korea and about 10000 in Japan, but the figures are dramatically decreasing. Most women divers are ordinary women. When we think of women divers, they are considered to be from low class and only pick abalones, trumpet shells and agar-agars for a living, but that is not true.
For example, 97% of Jeju women divers do farm work as well as pick seaweed in the sea. Their seaweed picking skills are not natural but are acquired through much practice.
How could they dive such a deep sea without great skill. This is so mysterious that the pentagon studied Jaejuwomen divers for improving the U.S military forces and construction in the sea.
