One of the priorities for researchers studying the traditional folk life of Korea, is to videotape the performance of folk songs and the traditional lifestyle of rural folks. Efforts to record rural life have been limited to observations recorded on paper or folk songs and tales captured on cassette tapes. An upgrade is now required, to ensure efforts in videotaping leave behind a vivid record and a richer resource for future generations. Undoubtedly, video images will be a much more effective medium than written documents or still pictures, which is why videotaping needs to be more productively used, in effort to preserve the record of a rural lifestyle that is rapidly vanishing from us.
No single video can capture the entirety of an activity. Videotaping involves a process of selecting subjects and the after process of editing. In this study, I propose that the two processes of selection and editing can lead to errors, referred to as the Primary Error and the Secondary Error henceforth. I also argue that it is necessary to maintain a 'video journal' with which we can complement video materials captured on tape, to minimize risk of these two errors.
This study is focused on why we need videotaping as a means to record aspects of traditional rural life, particularly the performance of folk songs sung by farmers during labor in rice paddies, as well as current practices of collecting video materials on them. The current situation revealed thar video collection of rice-paddy songs are grievously limited, with majority of time limited to videotaping 'major' cultural points, despite continual discovery of new folk songs by annual fork arts festivals. I propose a more extensive collection on folk songs, and that a production of video materials include participation of experts from different areas, to access their special knowledge and skills in a more professional way.
Finally, observations on my experience in videotaping the performances of Damyang Hwanggeum Deulnorae ("A Song of Golden Field at Damyang") and Gangjin Deulnorae ("A Field Song at Gangjin') are enclosed, together with a brief discussion on the 'video folklore journal', and propose the need to produce similar materials that can supplement a completed work.
As I mentioned earlier, Korea has only a limited number of video materials on traditional folk songs, not to mention research activities on such materials. We need in-depth discussions and actions concerning the production and collection of video materials, including the 'video folklore journals', on the numerous Korean folk songs, many of which are facing extinction.
