In the past, the folk song was generally used during the works and plays, so it could be found in places of the everyday life. However, it is now only existed in old people's mind or in musical tapes recorded by music researchers. It is commonly accepted that folk song is a very important national heritage. Therefore, many research projects and practices to preserve folk song have been conducted so far. However, the emptiness is always felt in the research and the strange is also felt in the practice. Therefore, a question "what the folk song really meant for us" again comes out at this moment.
Folk song is tend to be an old song. At present society, it does not mean the same as it did in the past. It is also true that folk song cannot be the "song of today", although it is worth to preserve and we should always look it back. Then, what is the reason that we walk up and down restlessly around folk song ar present? A reason may be thar today's music reality is not that we have chosen. The other reason may be that the seed of tomorrow's music is hidden in the old folk song.
In the past, we had our own style of musical creation methods. The methods were such as changing the face of music or put something into the already existing music. However, many aspects on music have been changed since the early 20th century when Western culture was rapidly introduced into Korea. The method of musical creation also has been changed a lot. Not only this, but we also lost the spirit of our music and our "song". I insisted that we should get back to folk song to recover our lost "song".
To recover our lost "songs", it is required to make folk song to be the start line of today's musical creation. Borrowing melodies directly from folk song should not be encouraged, whereas using alive materials among folk song should be encouraged. When folk song is used as raw materials in today's musical creation, the chemical changes are needed rather than the physical changes. The conversion of old song into contemporary shape is also necessary and amalgamation and expansion of song materials are needed as well. The road for tomorrow is only available for preparing people. At the moment when the darkness is so strong, "song of tomorrow" should be prepared.
