Sabong Jang Soon-ha(l928- ) is undoubtedly a mentor and master in the stardom of Korean Shijo poetry, He made his debut as a Shijo poet on the occcasion of the Writing Contest of National Foundation Day in 1957. In the contest he received the Grand Prix. Since then he has published excellent literary criticism such as Clinical Accusation if Shijo Literature, Foothold in the Rising if Shijo Literature, and Discourse upon Narrative Shijo. Those excellent critical essays had arguments about the matter of reformation and revival of Shijo literature. The matter is very important and necessary. He has also launched the campaign of Shijo reformation. He succeeded in the creation of Shijo in accordance with his literary principles.
Jang Soon-ha published superb eight volumes of his Shijo collections. The book titles are Baeksaeckbu (Ode to the White Color), Mukgye (A Tacit Agreement), and others. Those books had properly upheaved the status of the Korean traditional Shijo literature. From the beginning of the age of Shinmunhak (New Literature) up to 1960’s, Shijo literature had been in danger of the unfair treatment of a bastard. Designating concretely in the dimension of modern modification through experimental spirit, he has expanded the base of writers and readers in the areas of Common Shijo (Pyong Shijo), modern narrative Shijo, Eot Shijo (diagonal Shijo), and Compound Shijo (Honjak Shijo), He has reared the younger generation passionately. He and his junior writers have made a great contribution to the epoch-making development of modern Korean Shijo literature.
