The monk Chimgyaeng is considered one of the famous Buddhist Gasa poets of the late Joseon dynasty. He composed about three pieces of Gasa, one piece of Sijo, and about one hundred pieces of Gatha(偈頌) in Chinese throughout his life. He differed from other monks by his composition of Gasa and Sijo in Korean and Gatha in Chinese; his practice of Son meditation; and his teaching of other monks and lay people. From among monk Chim-gyoung’s many other literary works, I studied the characteristics of Son, and his different ways of describing it, in Chim-gyong's Gasa.
First, I found that Chim-gyaeng’s Gasa talks about two kinds of Son meditation: kong-an Son meditation and chanting Son meditation. Through his Gasa, Chim-gyong shows us all the different kinds of kong-an Son meditation --for example, sitting/walking practice and enlightenment meditation and the effects of this style of meditation, such as free acting after enlightenment, saving mankind, etc. In contrast, he only explains the necessity of practicing chanting Son meditation. The Son style that Chim-gyong talks about differs from the traditional patriarchal Son in two aspects. First, his Son wasn't based on the thought that all beings are originally enlightened, as in the traditional patriarchal Son. And second, he believed that the Buddha (rescuer) is differentiated from general mankind (the rescued), while the patriarchs did not differentiate between the two.
Next, I looked at Chim-gyong's three styles of description in his Gasa: story narrative, scenic description, and insistent opinion. For more effective expression, Chim-gyong used story narrative in order to introduce his monk life in his Guysangog(歸山曲), scenic description in order to show his enlightenment in his Chunghakdongga(靑鶴洞歌), and insistent opinion in order to solve the problems of the buddhist world in his Taepyonggog(太平曲).
I studied two aspects of the three pieces of Chim-gyong's Gasa, but there still remain several aspects of his Gasa to study. One could do a comparative study between Chim-gyong's Gasa and his other literary works, or between his Gasa and other monk's literary works.
