The present article deals with one of the formative events of the Reformation century which left an enduring stain on Calvin's historical reputation. In the condemnation of Servetus, the Church at Geneva received the support of the reformers, who believed that it was necessary to demand restraints on doctrinal debate in order to defend the emerging church.
This study intends to investigate Servetus' theological and ethical thoughts in terms of the rational piety, which has hardly received enough scholarly attention. By doing this, it hopes to contribute to the recovery of the forgotten voices in the history of the Reformation. The paper consists of four parts. First, a chronological reorganization of Servetus' life is attempted from the viewpoint of his relationship with other humanists and reformers. Second, the diverse scholarly perspectives on Servetus are reviewed. Third, his rational piety, which underlies his theological system, is focused on. Finally, Servetus' anthropology is explored in light of a few key themes. One of the conclusions mentions the resurgence of the individualistic spirit of Servetus in the mind of modern liberalism, and its inevitable conflict with the so called community oriented Christian way of life. This opens up a set of new questions on the nature of the power and the vision of community leaders and theological intellectuals.
