Byeon Gae-Ryang, a civil minister from the end of the Koryo Dynasty to the beginning of the Chosun Dynasty, had a strong desire for Confucian ideals above any others and tried to realize them through his writings. The subjects of female virtue, woman service and maternal manner described in his writings for women can be understood in the category of his works, in which he selected a world where an ideal is realized on the basis of an optimistic view of the actual as a literary matter. In fact, however, he was entangled with complications in the relations with women and even showed quite different behaviors from the logic he argued.
We can find 'immoral', 'wicked', 'poor and pitiful' femininity beyond 'wise and virtuous, beautiful, and glorious feminacy' in his writings. Also, we can observe a contradictory and double aspect of a high official in the early Chosun Dynasty: while he recognized what should be of a moral norm and was in the forefront of making it into a policy, he did not fully embody it in his consciousness. At the times, the early Chosun Dynasty, where the control started to be given to women by new systems and moral indexes though they were relatively free under the Confucian moral sense and patriarchal suppression, specially where 'feminity to be exalted' and 'feminity to be blamed' were recognized bisectionally as the view and role of woman were standardized, the actual feminity in his life and the fictional one in his writings showed both extremities: femininity as 'being' and 'what should be exalted'.
