This paper focuses on the women intellectuals who could read and write in Chinese letters, and had a certain degree of Confucian knowledge beyond the ability of writing Chinese poems in later Chosun Dynasty. In addition, they have married and managed the family life successfully as a normal woman. We can categorize them as unique women, and understand them through the concept of Woman SeonBi[女士] and Woman Nobleman(女中君子).
The term of Woman SeonBi had been used from long ago. They were regarded as women sho had the behavior of SeonBi[士]. We can see the term in Annals of the Chosun Dynasty and The Daily Records of Royal Secretariat of Choson Dynasty, but there are considerable gaps between them is spite of some common factors. Therefore we can divide intellectual women into a category of narrow meaning of Woman SeonBi. In the same way, Woman Nobleman, or Nobleman as woman was possible. We can see that term and usages in Annals of the Chosun Dynasty, and personal anthology, the collections of works. Woman Nobleman, or Nobleman as woman was the greatest honor to the women who had lived moral life and behavior under the Confucian World View.
Certainly there was a subtle and dynamic change of views on the women and the women intellectuals in the later Chosun Dynasty. Of course, basically it was a change of thinking under the Confucian World View. It seemed that the women could become Woman SeonBi through Confucian study, moral behavior, and self-cultivation. In the end, woman could be Nobleman, namely an ideal of human being. It also predicted an existence of self consciousness of a free human being liberated from various feudal bondages.
