Chung Du-kyung, one of the greatest men of literature of the 17th century's Korea, is famous for demonstrating his literary works of "manly spirit", and showed a stream of the Taoist ideas in the nation's intellectual world of those days, as well. A descendent of Chung Ryum, whose nom de plume is Bukchang, Chung Du-kyung had a different intellectual tendency from other writers at that time through the influence of his family. To him the Taoism is understood as the equal value with the Confucian and Buddhist ideas. The Taoism, he thought, seeks a relative value compared with the Confucius' view of absolute ones and made possible of liberal thinking free from the Confucian moral obligations and formalities which had become rigid because of "Civility Discussion". Furthermore, it awakens the nationalistic pride from the flunkyism toward China and made him recognize of the importance of military strength in the social trend of the literary indulgence to the neglect of martial arts at that time. For Chung Du-kyung the Taoism is important not as a method of seeking a long life and immortality but as a lesson for finding of a way of living for participation at the society and for retirement from it at a proper time to preserve his own integrity. His reading of Taoist classics and his experience at the society gave him an affluent nutrition for deciding the contents, forms, and materials for his literary works. His favorite militaristic materials for his novels like "swords" and "chivalrous men" and themes, along with his Taoistic tendency, were used as a satire of the problems in then turbulent times before and after the Manchu invasion of Korea in 1636. His Taoistic ideas reveals a cross section of open thinking trend beyond the Confucianism by intellectuals of the times and become an element for making him a writer of marked individuality in the mid-Chosun dynasty period.
