This paper attempts to examine the value of historical cinema as the material for enhancing the historical consciousness by focusing on Eisenstein's October. October is not free from being cataloged as the propaganda film like the other Soviet ones, because it had to accept and proselytize the legitimacy and superiority of the Soviet system to a certain degree. However, some images of October reflected historical reality. By comparing the visual images with the written historical materials, this paper seeks to suggest the possibility of utilizing October as the valuable historical source.
Two images consistent with the historical reality in October is that of Kerensky and that of the hostility between the privileged and the unprivileged. As to the images of Kerensky in October, it does not contradict with those unpopular images presented by contemporary newspapers and memoirs. The same is true as to the antagonistic feeling toward the upper classes. In this sense, October showed to some extent the circumstance of the Russian society prior to the socialist revolution.
However, we should pay attention to some defects of October as the historical materials. Being the propaganda film, it sometimes had to create the images inconsistent with the real situation of the time. But this inconsistency was understandable considering the situation of producing the Soviet films. In the end, if we try to accept the overall value of October with the critical perspective, it might give us the broader recognition on the 1917 revolution.
