For the last half of the century, the sovereign entities of the South and North sides of this peninsula have tried to establish their own identity. And they also claimed their own legitimacy, in the name of the Korean people and their history.
We could say that the peninsula's divided situation had a considerable impact on both sides' Korean historical studies, and those impacts were clearly mirrored in the history education which have been conducted by both sides as well. While the division of the peninsula was becoming more and more permanent, the governments and political leader groups of both sides continued to invest more and more efforts in their campaigns, claiming that they were the only legitimate entities that inherited the cause and legitimacy of the National movements of the Occupation period. So the most logical next step for them, was to enforce ideological educations in order to stabilize their respective positions.
The sovereign entity of the South claimed their own legitimacy as well, and also the inheritance of the Korean legacy, based on the existence of the Provisional Government and anti-Communist ideologies. The South also approached the issue of researches and education of the National movements from that perspective.
Since the liberation, dozens of history textbooks(either they were government designated/type-1 ones or authorized ones) have been published in South Korea. Designated or Authorized, those textbooks are all describing the heroic anti-Japanese struggles of the Korean soldiers. And at the same time they are all featuring perspectives that are actively supportive of anti-Communist ideologies, and they also consider the role of the Provisional government to be very important. The rightest leanings that the textbooks had shown over the years are only becoming stronger, even nowadays.
If educating certain issues such as the history of the Korean people's National movements are going to contribute not to the division but to the unification of the Korean people, there are many things to be done. First more references to the activities of the Communists should be inserted in order to achieve the least amount of balance for the contents of history textbooks. But efforts of that kind is rather technical in nature and certainly are not enough. Ideologically and philosophically active efforts based on sound historical understanding are definitely required, as only such kind of efforts would make it possible to establish a proper legitimacy for the unified Korea, a legitimacy which should be based upon the interest of the entire Korean population, and the independence and tradition of the Korean people. That kind of legitimacy would lead to a balanced and accurate understanding of the National movements conducted by the Korean people during the Occupation period.
