The system of ideology education properly functioned in East Germany and contributed to the formation of political awareness among young people. However, the economic crisis during mid-1970s weakened public confidence in the system. Young people in East Germany kept trying their communication with West Germany through various exchange of visits and media contact, and the ideology-centered education policy of the government in East Germany failed to serve the purpose of preventing the influence of West Germany. The continued communication between the two Germanys strengthened a thought that the two is one nation and should be reunited. The young people in East Germany who ever contacted the other side were able to adapt themselves to a new system of a reunited Germany faster than those who didn't.
The young people in West Germany showed a stronger tendency than other generations to see their national division as a not easily changeable reality and accept as it is. The government of West Germany tried to prevent the consolidation of division and keep the possibility of reunification open through school education. But, such effort wasn't enough to meet expectation. In early 1980s, the two governments agreed to expand opportunities for young people to visit other side of the wall through group tour. And this was quite successful in promoting interest in East Germany and reunification issues among the young students of West Germany. Not only the teenagers who met their relatives on the East side but also the ones with no relatives were able to visit East Germany together and have an opportunity to change their biased and limited perspectives on East German society.
However, some of the young people in West Germany who had contact with the young people in East Germany saw a wide gap of living conditions between the two societies, and looked down on East Germany with their lack of understanding. This kind of manner deteriorated already existing sense of alienation among the youths of East Germany. In order to prevent this problem, leaders of group tours in West Germany had to carefully design their programs in advance and to have thorough evaluation sessions at the end of every tour. The students of West Germany were also requested to admit differences of East German society and to work their differences out through careful and open-minded conversation.
