The researches about the German reunification in Korea are too much occupied with negative aspects as their costs and sociocultural conflicts between east and west Germans. However, we must now also pay attention to positive accomplishments as we look back the last 20 years, It is a great challenge for the reunified Germany that the economy of the new federal states didn't reach self-sufficient development yet and the difference of economic capacity in East and West Germany shows tenacity without apparent improvements since the middle of 1990s. Nevertheless, if we regard this as a failure, we turn a blind eye to the accomplishments of the 20 years of the German reunification. Without the self-sufficient economic development in East Germany, the life-standard of the East Germans is approaching that of the West Germans. It is owing to the enormous financial support of federal government on the basis of the great sacrifice of west German tax-payers. We should pay attention to the wonderful national consensus, the social and financial policy of the German federal government which realized this difficult task.
We came to know in this survey that the great problems of social integration lie in the situation of the German reunification rather than in the socialization during the rule of SED-dictatorship. Especially, we payed attention to the fact that the west German elites dominated the process of the reunification and that the failures of their policy in the beginning are making great burden on the economic reconstruction in East Germany and the social integration of the unified Germany. We concentrated on the economic and sociocultural changes in East Germany and the reactions of the East Germans. However, we must now also pay attention to the change in West Germany and its influences on the attitudes and political culture of the West Germans.
If we don't want to confront our unification as a great disaster in the near future, we must carefully investigate the light and shade of the German reunification. The German reunification which brought the East Germans not only emancipation from dictatorship but also severe trials can be then a blessing for us because it will become the great laboratory for the preparation of our unification. Did we make enough efforts to use this laboratory? I would like to ask it sincerely as we are approaching the bicentenary of the German reunification.
