There are so many number of the temple worshipping Guanyu across China and it is estimated to be reached up to 300,000 and it is impossible to number it exactly when the one installed at the each household is included. In China, nowadays, Guanyu already became a part of cultural tradition and from this point of view he can be said to be still alive among people of China. In the Chinese history, as the time is going by people’s attention toward Guanyu has been consistently amplified and this kind of unnatural phenomenon is called as ‘Guanyu phenomenon’ in China.
What makes it possible for Guanyu to attract people’s great attention? It is very extraordinary and unprecedented that Guanyu who ended up his life as just one of field-grade officer has eventually become to be a ‘Great Emperor’ or even the best ‘god of war’ after approximatively 1200 years of his death. The prevalence of novel of Sanguoyanyi[三國演義], written by Luoguanzhong[羅貫中] and based on Sanguozhi[三國志] of official history, is one of the well-known reason for this. However, Sanguozhi is not the one and only reason so we need to consider the other facts at the same time that have been shaping the Guanyu’s image especially in terms of historical context as various class such as the public, religious related people and ruler of each dynasties have participated together. The aim of this paper is to trace the historical process of how people of each Chinese dynasties imagined and possessed the Guanyu’s under the different conditions mainly during from Tang to Qing dynasty. With study, we can remind once more that the certain image we have is made rather than given as most of things are.
