Choe Chiwon(857～?) led an official life in China in 876. He wrote a work, Ssangnyeobungi. It was a fictionalized story of the Tomb of Ssangnyeo which was located in his new post. After that, someone wrote a novel, Choechiwon, referring to Ssangnyeobungi. The original text of Ssangnyeobungi was lost and the abridged contents of it was recorded in a Chinese document, while an unabridged text of Choechiwon survived in Korean documents.
The romance Choechiwon is the first work of the Korean classical novels. Establishing the identity of it could lead to embodying the starting point of Korean novel. But the scholars have not cleared up the identification.
The aim of this research is to clarify that Ssangnyeobungi is Choe Chiwon's Gimun(記文) and Choechiwon is likely to be the work of Bak Inryang(?～1096). It is generally asserted that Ssangnyeobungi is the original title of Choechiwon on the ground that Ssangnyeobungi was partly made up of fictitious elements. But I am sure that Choechiwon is Gimun, since the title of it is recorded in the list of articles in Chinese documents. Therefore the two are different works and quite dissimilar in character.
The recent theory concerning the authorship of Choechiwon is divided into two?Choechiwon's work and Choe Kangyu's work. But the two theories are not to be accepted. The theory of Choechiwon's work is not plausible, since the writer will not fictionalize himself in general. The theory of Choe Kangyu's work is not plausible, since he was a close associate of Choe Chiwon. Therefore I would give shape to the theory of Bak Inryang's work which was vaguely proposed by earlier scholars.
Bak Inryang is very likely to be the author of Choechiwon when we consider the following respects. The diplomatic relations between Korea and China were broken off between the age of Choe Chiwon and that of Bak Inryang. After that, Bak Inryang was sent as an envoy to China. The courses of journey of the two men in China were similar to each other. Traditionally literary men had an opinion that the two men have similar poetic style. And Bak Inryang was a literally gifted man to wrote a novel.
The romance of China, Taepyeonggwanggi, was composed in 978. The author of Choechiwon is to be neither Choe Chiwon nor Choe Kangyu, since he made use of the contents of Taepyeonggwanggi. It is recorded in Chinese documents that Bak Inryang quite freely made use of the contents of Taepyeonggwanggi.
