This thesis is intended to investigate the relations of learning, merrage & gender at 1910's as comparing 『Mujeong(무정)』 and 「Gyeonghee(경희)」.
『Mujeong(무정)』 and 「Gyeonghee(경희)」 are the educational discourse that learning is the most important to men and women at that times. But there is a wide differents between men and women. Men dosen't have difficulty their learning since only one role, learning is expected from them. But women is expected the different role. Traditional society expected women that bear and bring up children. So women have troubles between learning and merrage.
There is a interesting differents between 『Mujeong(무정)』 by male writer and 「Gyeonghee(경희)」by female writer
The differents between them is as follow.
First, Hyeangsik as the hero of 『Mujeong(무정)』 asserts the importence of learning about the modern system in the absract without problems. While on the other, Yeongchae as woman chracter improved by learning her lot that has to die at traditional society.
Gyeonghee as the heroine of 『Gyeonghee(경희)』 has eager to learn. But her father compells his daugter to merry. So she faces the alternative choice, learning or merrage. Finally she makes up her mind to choose leraning. This fiction shows the concrete reasons why women learn.
Secondly, women can come to the point of maturity only with the support and teaching of men whereas men grow up by themselves in 『Mujeong(무정)』. However we observe a woman grow up by herself in 「Gyeonghee(경희)」.
Thirdly, there is a intrusive narrator in 『Mujeong(무정)』. He not only reports but freely comments on his chracters, evaluating their actions and motives and expressing his views about human life in general.
While on the other, the narrator of 「Gyeonghee(경희)」 is unintrusive and objective. He for the most part discribes, reports, or shows the action in dramatic scenes, without introducing his own comments or judgments.
So the voice of intrusive narrator is didectical in 『Mujeong(무정)』 whereas the voice of unintrusive narrator is persuasive.
This is a proof that the merrage doesn't prevent men from learning, even if the merrage prevent women for learning. the male writer dosen't realize this difference, but the female writer has a correct understanding.
