In Korean culture, 'Nature' has been recognized as a type of personality. This attitude towards nature can be applied to the 'Sea'. The sea has indivisible relations with the fundamental way of being. Nevertheless the sea has not yet been researched in this aspect, and, as a result, the sea in Korean literature remains unknown.
This study deals with the relations between 'Sea' and 'Life', focusing on Shimcheong-gean, one of the most well-known classics in Korea. Eventually it will illuminate in Korean literature the sea which has been so far unknown to the public. For the purposes of this study, the sea in Shimcheong-gean and Big Theft Gumuni has not been researched as a literary tool of maximizing Shimcheong's filial piety. The text has been univocally understood, highlighting her love for her father at the cost of her own life. At the same time, it obscures the unreasonable demand of life on the living. The result is that criticism of reality has disappeared, and an image of moral and Confucian humanity remains. The abnormal has taken the place of the normal, and this has been gradually accepted as insignificant. The sea, Indangsoo, was the one which accepted the resentment of the poor who had been exploited by the northern barbarians[Oranke]. He was also the one who criticized the inhumane environment of sacrificing lives for profits.
As shown in the above-mentioned text, the sea from the perspective of life is no longer a meaningless subject. It is a fact of life that many unheeded truths can be rediscovered. The sea has been left alone in a moral world for too long to lose its colorful features and senses. It is not a result of intention, but rather such a routine image of the sea has been too firmly rooted in our minds to recognize something different. Every single substance and essence has been left outt. All aesthetic value of creativity has been hastily defined as the sea itself. Now it is time to find these colorful images of the sea represented in Korean literature. It is time to comprehend the multiplicity of their meaning. Then we can enjoy the secret world through this newly discovered magnifier.
