There is an abundant vocabulary about the sea in the poetry and essay by Kim Kirim with his experience in urban life. One feature is that the vocabulary is always connected with the scenery and customs of urban life.
In this study, therefore, I have tried to see how the capitalistic and modem experience in Kyeong Sung could be reflected on his writing through the image of the sea appears very often in his writing. The sea, in Kim Kirim's writing, is a daydream excited by the consumption of urban life. Especially, the department store is the most distinctive factor-exciting daydream. Kim Kirim expressed the fantasy arisen by goods with the image of the sea.
However, there is a melancholy that dwells in his image of the sea because there exists a wide gap between magnificent urban life and daily life. Therefore, Kim Kirim's image of the sea expresses 'the urban life over which a disaster is hanging' metaphorically. And it is almost impossible to get out of such a life. Only an ascetic who can cast his desire away or a builder creating new life without end can get out of such a life.
In conclusion, there reflected an author's dark vision for the modem society of consumption on the image of the sea of Kim Kirim.
