Lee, Tae-jun and Kim, Ki-rim prominent modernists of modern Korean literature, were also writers of the 'diction on writing'. At the same time that their activity was focused largely on the creative writings such as short stories and poems, they did try to make standard diction of Korean language. They could'nt leave behind the problem of language, which was the main concern of the Korean intellectuals during the Japanese colonial domination. Focusing on the diction on writing by these two writers, this paper examines not only how they invented the modern concept of style and composition, but also why they formulated different ways of conceiving style and composition.
Lee, Tae-jun who adopted Buffon's conception of style as his view of language, emphasized in his book Munjang gangwha, the importance of individual writing after the unification of the written and spoken language is achieved. Under the understanding that "the feeling or emotive factor is a core of modern literary writing", he suggested a modern concept of style based on the notion of 'expression'. While not neglecting to make a standard of Korean language, he tried above all to establish a modern 'stylistics'.
On the contrary, Kim, Ki-rim was concerned, in his 'lecture on the writing' Munjangron singang appeared under the Liberation Space, about another main problem of language, 'communication and interpretation'. In the 'Liberation Space', Kim, Ki-rim's concerns were on the public area such as nation state and linguistic communication between people rather than on the personal values like artistic expression of feelings. His concern may be formulated as "How to do things with words" as formulated by J. Austin. Kim, Ki-rim emphasized the importance of communication in terms of language. Kim, Ki-rim, who adopted I. A. Richards's thesis "Rhetoric should be a study of misunderstandings and its remedies", advanced a theory of language largely based on the 'communication', not to be limited to the notion of 'style'.
