The purpose of this study is to examine how and why Kim, Ki-rim invented modern concepts of style and composition. In order to do it, this study argues his lecture on the writing, Munjangron Singang from a rhetorical perspective.
While attempting to present practical rhetoric based on general linguistics in which statement, expression, and interpretation are illustrated, he emphasized communication rhetoric in language. Adapting I. A. Richards's thesis "Rhetoric should be a study of misunderstandings and its remedies," he presented a new theory of language based on the concept of the communication.
He criticized traditional rhetoric which had focused on the trope and style, and developed persuasion rhetoric. As a matter of fact, he seriously concerned aspects of propaganda, stating that the ethic of propaganda should be prerequisite for democracy. Through it, he hoped that democracy culture can be spreaded.
As for literature, he regarded it as a style of communication from the rhetorical perspective. Therefore, he asserted that literature is a form of emotion which includes the figurative language, and that 'description' and 'observation' based on modern positivism should be emphasized. In addition to he explained principles of realism and type.
Based on the identification of subjects, He explained tropes it in the relation with people's emotion. He asserted that metaphor, a kind of tropes, is an interaction of tenor and its vehicle, and that figuration of words were spreaded in the everyday words. Finally new words can be created through metaphor and figuration of words.
