I have argued that the understanding of Hong Ik In Gan' that only considers its aspect of 'outwardness' toward others does not do full justice to the notion and limits it. Rather, the 'inwardness' of the notion must also be acknowledged for it to be fully understood.
An investigation into the 'inwardness' of this concept involves a investigation into the nature of human beings, not in the sense of a Nieburian introspection on original sin, but rather as a scientific analysis into the nature of the human brain. Through this analysis, the possibility of 'Hongikingan' within humans will be either be denied or confirmed.
The research done by Dr. Roger Speary from the 1960's have mapped out the contuours of the human brain. The map exhibits that the right brain has a emotional role whereas the left brain has a rational role. This bifurcated view of the human brain and thus human identity is a major obstacle for the human capacity of 'Hongikingan'. 'Hongikingan' is a capacity for an osmosis between these two realms of the brain, that is, a capacity of an dynamic looping between the emotional and rational self.Without a more wholistic understanding of the human brain and the self, the 'outwardness' of Hongikingan will not be able to be fullfilled.
