Gorbachev's era in the 1980s have brought increase in economic cooperation between Russia and Asia-Pacific countries including Korea, China and Japan. Growth of trade between the two regions have raised problems in ports' facilities in the Russian Far East in which adequate investment was not made during the Soviet era.
This study aims to examine the historical economic development between the two regions focused on recent increase in trade and port throughputs in the regional ports.
Although trade between the two regions occupies about 23 percent of the total trade of Russia in 1997, rate of trade volume have increased rapidly compared with other regions.
In order to cope with increase in port throughputs in the Russian Far East, the Russian government have made comprehensive plans to expand port facilities in the region. However due to Russia's sluggish economic development, Russia has allocated limited funds for the port developments of the Russian Far East. Russia hopes to attract foreign capitals for the project especially from the United States and Japan.
The port development of the Russian Far East may provide good opportunities with Korean ports, particularly East coastal ports in Korea. Furthermore Korean firms also need to consider involvement in the Russian port developments.
