In 1920s, Lee Kwang-su's concerns were on the public area such as nation rather than on the personal values like liberation of feelings. It is noted that signs of desire inconsistent with this concerns on public appear in spite of his strong wolition of enlightening the nation. And also is noted that the self in his various texts conflicts one another. Noticing the contradiction that exists in his editorials and novels, this essay is to clarify Lee Kwang-su's deep consciousness that he seems not to be able to control.
It was tradition that he recognised as the essential components of self. I Ie thought both a person and his(her) ancestor's spirits were connected without a gap. His such thought appears in his critical works and novels. Self is not an independent thing but one of the numerous networks of life. Such concept of self lies in a contrary position to the artistic concept of self in the early 1920s which valued high the self consciousness and idiosyncrasy(Kim Dong-in and Yum Sang-seop had held the latter value).
Lee Gwang-su demanded love and sacrifice for the Chosun nation in his editorials and created sacrificial and selfless character in his other literary works. 1bey make an oath m keep religious ideals and abstinence but it seems ambiguous, empty and mechanical due to the feelings which are uncontrollable by sublime ideal Contrary to the author's attitude which criticized sexual love strongly, his characters thirst for love constantly, and show carnal desire.
They strive to restrain sexual desire, but are possessed by it. Especially Regeneration(<재생>) is a unique description of an individual's upheaval of that period showing violent feelings like love, jealousy, desire, enchantment and so on. But sexual attraction is transferred finally to attraction to wealth, and is thus covered up in this noveL Bodily love is unacceptable to ill: Gwang-su who draws a strict line between body and spirit.
It's because he thinks spiritual love is the symbol of civilization while carnal desire is primitive and uncivilized that he values spiritual love so high. He denounced the so called decadent literature then prevalent as being savage. The love and searching for desire being raged, self in his novel feels excessive guilty conscience and fastidiousness. He drew a line between civilization and savageness and internalized the requirements of civilization so that he could mask the real nature of his self. But in literary works these confused aspect. of feelings, sensuality, attraction are revealed and his ideal self collapses.
So far Lee Gwang-su's 1920s novels reveal contradiction in his concept of self especially on concerning the body/spirit issue. His 1920s works are the scene of struggle and scepticism on the definition of civilization and savageness after all.
