First, Lee Gwang-su had ‘Lee Bang-ja’s Nine Royal Verses’ published in both Japanese and Korean languages. Through the original Japanese version, he aimed to spread Japanese language across the country. In addition, the Korean version targeted to make Koreans turn into the people of the Japanese empire (so-called ‘Hwangguk Sinminhwa’). Second, Lee Bang-ja expressed his opinion on the Pacific War and conscription system in ‘Lee Bang-ja’s Nine Royal Verses,’ and Lee Gwang-su quite agreed with it. After all, these circumstances made Lee Gwang-su translate Lee Bang-ja’s wakas into Korean. Furthermore, Lee Gwang-su adhered to the five-seven-five-seven-seven pattern of waka in translating the Japanese verses into Korean based on the following reasons: First, Lee Gwang-su was so internalized and absorbed into the rhythm enough to write his own waka. Second, he had so much love and respect for the wakas of Lee Bang-ja, the last crown princess of Korea.
