The wide spread of wonder and amazement of the early Chosun Dynasty at the 'virginity' is closely related with the process of accepting the Modern Period. The 'virginity', which had re-emerged and was rediscovered in the Chosun Dynasty around 1920, and had a meaning confined to the physical innocence, was required as a necessity for developing a relationship between man and woman, because it could imply spirituality excluding carnality. Moreover, the 'virginity', which is the physical innocence of the woman, was the necessary requirement in the aspect of 'spiritual' love which had an eternal meaning, contrast to the finite, physical relationship, and fascinated the new youths of the period.
Considering the relationship between the establishment of the Modern Period and the 'virginity', the loss-of -virtue motif, found in the literary of the Chosun in the early 1920s, indicates various degrees of acceptance of the Modernity by the Chosun. In Moo Jung by Lee Kwang-soo, as well as in the works of Kim Dong-in, Na Do-hyang, Hyun Jin-gun, there appears loss-of-virtue motives, and the tragedy of the carnal relationship between man and woman and the absolute value of the 'spiritual love', supported by the former, is repeatedly emphasized. That these works, employing the same motif of the loss-of -virtue, emphasizes by the same method the meaning of the 'spiritual love' and the spiritual relationship between man and woman, which is symbolized by the 'virginity', gives rise to many considerations.
Especially, the absurd upset phenomena found, concerning the 'Love', in those works having the loss-of -virtue motves, the absurd phenomenon that the feeling of love is manipulated to produce conflict between the carnal love and the spiritual love, for example, can be interpreted as showing the limit of the modern Chosun which could not help but accept the modernity in notion only. And it can be easily read out that this kind of the illusion of the 'love' arising out of the mismatch between the life and the modern conception, as well as the attitude of the wonder and amazement of these literary works at the 'virginity' does not come over the shallow frenzy over the foreign culture called a 'spiritual love'.
