Most characters appeared in the novel Honbul are not the constituent members in the perfect family. They are troubled in absence of husband, wife, child, or parents. The situation which husband is away represents virtual images of patriarchal, Confucian outlook and of the men and suggests that women should be one who is willing to get over the national identity crisis substantially. And wife-absented figures give a hint about frailness and unreality of the men revealed by the crisis during loss of state power and convention crumbling due to modernization. Beside, child-absented figures show the attitude of life through unhappiness and sufferings. And also, patents-absented figures have existential character and so run after overturn of Confucian standard and grief related to class distinction.
There are vertical and horizontal repetitions at the same time of a type of characters in Honbul. The characters in vertical repetitions imply that historical changes are formed by gradual sublation, not by only one epoch-making event and also present the intention of Honbul that original form of life never change even during the change of time. Next, the characters in horizontal repetitions mean duplication of image or character between figures in the same generations. That shows the intention for presenting desirable aspect of life by comparing with contrary natures in the same situation.
There are several reasons why the conflicts in Honbul come to the surface dramatically. First, there are triangular composition Me-an, Go-ri-bae-mi, and gu-mong-gul. The common people in Go-ri-bae-mi contribute to alleviation
of class conflict between Me-an and gu-mong-gul. Second, Its because of internal duality each class has. The nobility in Me-an is divided into two groups. One has a sense of class as it is, the other try to understand suffering and distress of the lower class. The lowest-class people in Me-an are also classified as two groups. One give bent to their anger as a lowest-class people, the other adapt themselves to their fate having a dread of the noble man. Two different figure in the same class prevent conflict from coming to the front by interaction between figures. Third, characters appeared in Honbul is composed of three groups; accepting the structure of a society, overthrowing, and sublating. The character accepting the structure of a society maintains strength and weakness in those days, the character overthrowing the system expresses the contradiction of the day and yet, the character sublating the system concretizes the aspect of reconciliation in Honbul by expressing the idea which a history should be changed and progressed in peace, not in revolutionary process. Forth, there is national crisis, the loss of national power. The reason why we lost our tension when reading Honbul is that opposing composition is weakened. By the way, it begin with fundamental intention of Honbul which pursuits unity internally, which actualizes independent will externally.
