This thesis is based on the notion that considerations which inquire into generational differences are possible. From this point of view, a new approach to the 1960s Korean Modern Literature is needed. Previous studies had the imitations of having accepted critical words uncritically, without substantiation.
This study attempts to analyze into the Prosaic Age which is a literary magazine of the collegians of the 1960s. The Prosaic Age captures the scene of the so-called 4.19 generation appearing on the Korean literary circles for the first time. The constituent members of the Prosaic Age are, representatively, Kim Hyn, Kim Sung-ok, Choi Ha-lim, Kim Chi-suo Their uniqueness lies in the fact that they were all students at the college of humanities, graduate of Seoul National University, majoring in foreign literature, and that they were all natives of Jun-nam.
This study especially attempts to elucidate the relationship between the 'sea' and 'death' in the Prosaic Age. The 'Sea' is a major motif in the novels of the Prosaic Age. The site of the 'Sea' implies two the contradictive images ; the site of peace and the site of strong emotion, or the site of death and the site of life. And by the side of sea, stands a character who is in mental anguish with captured by an illusion.
