It was not until merely 10 years ago(in 1991) that Korea and Poland entered into diplomatic relations officially, and began to have economic and cultural inter-change and cooperation mutually. Apart from those formal relations, however, a few of both people's had already visited at the other country about 100 years ago privately.
Among them, Jeong, In-Seob(鄭寅燮, 1905 -1983), who was the scholar of English literature and had considerable affect on formation of modem literature in Korea, also visited at Poland on the way to Copenhagen by train in 1936. Above all, he was the only Korean who had considerable concern and passion for Poland and for Polish literature before independence of Korea. Besides, he wrote several literary essays, recollections and poems that were concerned with Poland and Polish literature, because he has various interests in world literature as a scholar of English literature. For example, he wrote article which was titled 「Mr. Reymont's death - toward Peasants, work of a novel prize for literature」 (his age 21, 1926) on ChooSunllBo(朝鮮日報). And later he also wrote 「Impressions after visiting in Poland」 on DongAIlBo(東亞日報) and 「Profile of Polish literary world」on a journal 『Chokwang(朝光)』each when Poland got attacked by Germany in 1939.
According to those writings, We can figure out the fact that he looked back upon his Poland visiting days with a passion and had his unique perspective for Polish literature.
When he visited in Poland in 1936, this country was so newly rising. He had expressed so strong impression, for example, that there were complicated racial antipathy between Polish and Jewish; Polish people kept strict watch against neighbored powerful nations; each building decorated with beautiful flowerpot in Warszawa; Polish people loved their culture, literature and music so much, and so on.
In addition, he was so interested in Polish literature and history that he could write peculiar character of Polish literature. He said it seemed to be melancholy and gloomy outwardly, but it also had strong national consciousness and passion internally within texts. He emphasized that Polish literature had a vision which could look forward to optimistic future even though the nation was under pessimistic fate. He also wrote about famous Polish writers, for example, Henryk Sienkiewicz(writer of Qui vadis?) and Reymont(writer of Peasants) who were winners of the Nobel prize in literature, understanding development of history of the Polish literature. His perspective for Polish literature was correct and is valid until today.
In short, Jeong In Seob was the first Korean who tried to understand Polish nation and the people's fate in heart and wrote critically and concretely several characters which Polish literature had had for a long time.
