There have been a great number of discussions on the essence of tales and novels so far. However, these discussions have revealed many problems because they are based on a wrong assumption that novels are a 'complete narration' while tales are not. Our perspective on this is that tales themselves are a 'complete narration' and novels are 'narration beyond narration.' Through the self-expansion of scenes that compose a narration, novels are characterized by integrating elements of lyricism, didacticism, and drama. Novels in the early stage opened a new road of positive acceptance of lyrical verse and debate in a narration. In the later period of Chosun Dynasty, novels broadened their literary width, proliferating fast into the general public. Novels along this trend achieved their prominence amid the center of literature. This period deserves to be called, the 'Era of Novels.' But the prevalence of novels did not necessarily bring about the regression of tales. Amid interaction with novels, tales made great progress in their quality and quantity. New stories were produced, the reality was fortified and techniques of expression were innovated. Through this process, works of Pansori as 'oral novels' were often produced. Now the stream of literary history is advancing back to the era of storytelling, past the era of modern novels inclined to fortify reality. It is time to search for new prospects looking back on the aspects of past tales and novels.
