The purpose of this study is to clarify the social and political appropriations in the transformation process of fairy tales in the Western culture. The rise of the fairy tale in the Western world as a mass-mediated form of folk tale coincided with the decline of feudalism and the formation of the bourgeois. Folk tales went into printing at a point when commercial market for children's literature, fairy tales, was developing. In that process, the earthly humor and burlesque twist disappeared from the prints but instead moral instructions and Christian patriarchal guidance appeared.
The Brothers Grimm, the most representative fairy tale writers, made major changes while they edited the tales. They eliminated erotic and sexual elements that might be offensive to middle-class morality and added a number of expressions and references of Christian values. They also highlighted the role play of the male and female characters in the tales which reflected the patriarchal gender role of the time. Since then, their work has been seen as the canon of the Western fairy tales
In the 20th century, these fairy tales became the source material for animated films. Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, for example, produced in 1937 as Walt Disney's first full-length animated feature became the prototype for Disney's other fairy tale animations. Since then, Disney has produced a number of animations as well as commercial products relating to them. Television and the theme parks accelerated the explosive growth of Disney, a conglomerate of huge capital and cutting-edge media technology. Furthermore, innocence in Disney's world becomes the ideological vehicle through which folk tales are rewritten. The Disney animations reinvent fairy tales as a pedagogical and political tool to secure its own interests, authority, and power.
