The Wei-Jin period was the turning point of turbulent world. The new period of transition needed the new spirit. This new atmosphere made Xuan Xue(玄學) appeared.
Xuan Xue advocated by He Yan(何晏) and Wang Bi(王弼) was the speculative philosophy studying the question of universe essence. The kernel of this question was' gui wu(貴無), what was called the ben ti of all thing of the universe is non-being(無 :wu). The theory of gui wu was developed by Xiang Xiu(向秀)and Guo Xiang(郭象) as the theory of self-transformation(獨化 ;du hua).
Xuan Xue objects to all the factitious things. Therefore, it cannot but ignore system, morality and courtesy and it argues that governing should follow the submission to reason.
Xuan Xue set out by criticizing the Confucian ideas but Xuan Xue is never divided from Confucian ideas. Wei-Jin-Xuan-Shi(魏晋玄士) can be understood the transcendence from mundane world depending on Taoism in Confucianism. Xuan Xue amalgamated with Buddhism as well.
Shi Ren(士人)'s self-recognition by the new trend of thought made his mind and spirit animated and this was the chance for him to enlarge his ideas and cultural understanding.
Wei-Jin-Shi-Ren(魏晋士人) lived the suffering, wandering life in the ideal and reality experiencing the political dark side. Wei-Jin-Shi-Ren tried to find various ways to defeat the nothingness and despair and one of the ways was the drinking. On the other hand, he paid attention to the internal world, life and spirit so that he developed the way of being eternal youth and a Taoist hermit with supernatural powers. His excessive fondness of appearance was the part of Shi Feng(士風) which cherished the human's whole value.
The new Shi Feng brought the development of lyrical and aesthetic Jiterawre.
There was the essenrial thing to enjoy the Xuan Xue Tan Lun(玄學談論) of metaphysical philosopher. That was the economical background. Wei-Jin-Shi-Ren accumulated huge fortune and made money continuously. This is antinomy. Because of these reasons, Xu an Xue was regarded as the theory supported the profits of the landed classes.
The new trend of thought of Wei-Jin-Xuan-Xue(魏晋玄學) made Chinese in Middle age manage more abundant and well-off life freeing themselves from conventional life as arousing new influence in the every parr of society. The era of Wei-Jin was not only the transition period of crisis and despair but also preparing future.
