The paper aims to study the civilization-critical characteristics intrinsic in Kim Ki-rim's critical activities and process. In this paper, the writer attempted to show in what way confronting concepts such as the East and the West, and races acted out in Kim Ki-rim's critiques, and to reveal in detail how the civilization-critical characteristics of Kim Ki-rim's criticism achieved both mutual tension and mutual adjustment with his uniquely dialectical, comprehensive logic.
According to this, Kim Ki-rim, since his early days of critical activity, took the position of emphasizing the initiatives of the western culture and modernism based on the binary opposition structure of Orientalism - namely, the West and the East. However, it is believed that after undergoing a milestone between 1939 and 1940, Kim established a logic that resisted the trend of imperialist Japan's theory of "the greater East Asia co-prosperity sphere" going mainstream, by using such civilizational views as his leverage while identifying racial principals. His works, "Historic Position of Modernism", "Reflection on Chosun Literature" and "Literary Fragment on the Orient" are important reviews that illustrate this process.
This paper focuses on, among others, shedding a new light on the way Kim Ki-rim's criticism progressed before and after Korea's liberation from imperialist Japan, centering on the continuity that existed under the surface of severance. According to this, the inclination toward the people's democracy that Kim Ki-rim's criticism exhibited since the liberation is an impact of revolution theories of the age and at the same time a result of his efforts at concretizing the racial principals he wished to grasp back in the 1940s. In addition, the fact that Kim tried to find a new possibility within the South Korean regime without resorting to approving and supporting the theory of the people's democracy despite such an inclination is presumed to be a result of his uniquely critical ideas on civilization acting as a new controller. "The Destiny of Culture", which Kim published immediately before the Korean War is a critical essay that embodies such an idea.
Re-organization of Kim Ki-rim's critical process in a new angle has greater significance than simply considering it as a part of research into Korean literary history. Studying the nature of Kim Ki-rim's critical works before and after the liberation at this juncture, when inter-Korean exchange and communication are more active than before, could also serve as an inquiry into the issue of historic insight and intuition inherent in criticism as a function.
