The flow field and spray characteristics for the combustion chamber having pancake cylinder head shape was numerically computed and analyzed using a modified KIVA-II. The chamber has 1 - inlet port, 2-side inlet ports and l-exhaust port with different ports angles. In the computation, the chopping svhich strips out or adds planes of cell across the mesh adjacent to the TDC and ports parts is used for preventing the demand of exceed time during the computation. The modified k-ε turbulent model including the consideration of the compressibility effect due to the compression and expansion of piston was also used.
Consequently, in case of θ1=θ2 = 45deg the economy of the fuel consumption and the scavenging efficiency were found to be better compared to the case of θ1=θ2 =30deg and 60deg because the blow-by oucrred during the scavenging process was diminished and the recirculation are hardly generated. And as the spray was also found to be widely dispersed at the center portion of the cylinder. It was also found that as the injection velocity was incresed the spray tip penetration length became larger : It is thus expected that the combustion efficiency could be incresed in case of v,= 6000cm/sec compared to v,= 4000cm/sec and v_1= 8000c/n/sec. because the spray droplet was widely disributed at the center portion of
the cylinder.
