The April 3rd and the May 18th are physical and psychological traumas Koreans have had to cope with. There are many who are still unable to come to terms with them because of ideological burden they had to bear since. It was unfortunate enough that history book couldn't provide direct access to objective facts and social reality regarding these tragic incidents, for it has been swayed and often manipulated by the dominant ideology. It is possible to argue that Hyun Giyoung and Im Chulwoo are the better historians and that they have been able to do what historians couldn't do: to construct a picture which is partly a narrative of events, partly a description of situations, exhibition of motives, analysis of characters. Perhaps what Hyun and Im have been trying to do is somewhat similar to what the narrator of Andre Brink's novel A Dry White Season notes, "write it down. To report what I know. So that it will not be possible for any man ever to say again: I knew nothing about it." Hyun and Im have successfully characterized and internalized the April 3rd and the May 18th by showing what ordinary people had to go through: their suffering, agony, misery, and ideological stigma. Their novels also testify that history repeats itself unless we learn a vital, unforgettable lesson from it.
