With justice embodiment movement since the late 1960s, Catholic Church in Korea had a great effect on the church itself and the Korean society. Though, in the beginning, not fully prepared for its movements for both just society and human rights, the Church began to realize that there were much demands for the Church to serve for the people and society of Korea.
The Church tried to recognize the suffering of the people and find ways to cure it since the 1970s. The central effort was given to the issues related to 5·18 KwangJu Democratization Movement. The churches in Kwangju suffered with the people in Kwangju during the Kwangju movement, and were determined to find the truth about the incident. But the Catholic Church of Korea responded with silence, not making the effort of the churches in Kwangju nationwide one.
The Church had given cooperative gesture to the political circle in the 1980s, when numberous church events took place. The government supported the Church to a great deal, and the Church in return induced the churches to lower their criticism on the government. Majority of bishops were critical of the church involvement in social and political movements. In this circumstance, it was unlikely to expect the Church to conduct a leading role in challenging the government. Therefore, the KwangJu issues were dealt mainly by the churches in Kwangju. Gradually, however, the truth about the Kwangju incident became to be known; the Kwangju movement was to be understood as a movement for peace and justice of the entire country.
Participation of the religrous bodies in social issues was one of duties of the religion. Insisting upon the separation of church and state while ignoring this duty would only reject the very existence of the religion. To secure basic human rights, pursue virtue, and work for just society were the reasons why the religion exists in the human society.
