This study inspects Chae Man-Sik's literary works at the stand points of manners and customs in 1930's colonial Korea. Chae Man-Sik's short story Nearby the Station(1937), and novel Passion for Gold(I939) dealt his experience of Gold mine.
During the 1930's, most Koreans dreamt about gold and many people, including former socialists, journalists, scholars, lawyers, literary critics and poets, not to mention peasants and laborers rushed to the gold mines. Koreans, intellectuals in particular, call this age "the age of the gold maniac".
In the 1930's the Japanese Colonial Government increased gold mining for the Japanese Empire which was confronted by economic crisis for its chronic lack of gold. During the 1930's, the prise of gold in Japan, including colonial Korea, had gradually increased as gold had become the most important material for the entire empire and its economic system.
Chae Man-Sik not just dealt this phenomenon in short stories and novels but also threw himself to that. To compare his works which dealt gold mine and his experience of gold mine, this study shows a portrait of the artist in the age of the gold maniac.
