The purpose of the paper is to investigate the life of Austrians Jews’ life and historical events through the film Woman in Gold (Thompson, 2015). Several films about the Holocaust were reviewed to learn about European Jews’ tragic history during the Nazis regime. The background of Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer and Klimt’s paintings are also important in this paper. Many art collections and valuables owned by the affluent Austrian Jews were confiscated by the Nazis. After the Art Restitution Conference in 1998 in Vienna, the Austrian government returned stolen works of arts to the families and the Holocaust survivors. Films are an effective medium to teach history and unforgettable true stories in the EFL classes. Films which are based on compelling true stories can be authentic resources for the EFL students to teach valuable lessons about life. To conduct this research, the script of Woman in Gold was used and analyzed. Woman in Gold can serve as an important resource to teach history and sociocultural issues. Specific classroom applications will be used so that students can develop communicative competence through historical films. The ultimate goal of this study is to guide EFL students to talk about important history and social issues in English.
