This thesis is one of the studies on the Grammar of Lun-Yu 論語, or the Analects of Confucius, and treats the prepositional (之) in the phrase-construction of "the Attributive+之+The Head-Word"
In the construction, the attributive as the adjective-modifier modifies the head-word as the nounmodified and the prepositional (之) interposed between the two parts suggests the various meanings and relations of them.
The typical attributive of noum is the adjective and it precedes directly to the noun.
But, in Chinese, as the simple-word is stem-word and accordingly has no morphological difference, the word besides the adjective can precede noun as the attributive.
Comparing the two cases, i.e., one case with (之) interposed between the attributive and the head-word and the other case without (之), we could find relations and the meanings of the two parts, i.e., the attributive and the head-word are so complicated and distinguishable.
This thesis is primarily divided into two parts, that is, "the attributive+之+The
Head-Word" and "the attributive+The Head-Word" The former is secondarily separated in two, that is, the one cases of the attributive of noun and the other cases of the attributive of words besieds noun. And the cases of the
attributive of noun are subdivided into many cases as follows:
A. Classification by the attributive:
1. the attributive of proper-noun
2. the attributive of common-noun
3. the attributive of a phrase-construction
B. Classification by the Head-word
1. the head-word of person
2. the head-word of things
3. the head-word of abstract-noun
4. the head-word of time, direction of place, etc.
The cases of the attributive of words besides noun are subdivided in two as follows:
(1) the attributive of the time or the adjective
(2) the attributive of the verb or the constructions of "Verb-Object."
The other cases of "the attributive+The Head-Word" are subdivieded as follows:
1. (noun-noun) 2. (pronoun-noun) 3. (adjective-noun) 4. (numeral-noun) 5.
(demonstrativepronoun-noun) 6. (verb-noun) 7. (attributive-noun)
