Purpose: Vocabulary development among children of preschool age is weighted towards nouns. Research on their ability to use vocabulary from the different parts of speech is important, as it could lead to promoting their use of more varied language. The objective of this study therefore was to investigate the generative naming ability of nouns and verbs by children of preschool age in order to understand the characteristics of their expressive vocabulary development. Methods: A total of 16 normal children (10 girls, 6 boys) of the ages of 4 and 6 were selected as subjects. The subjects were provided with a task that involved the generation of nouns and verbs, and results were obtained by analyzing a recording of their speech. The subjects were asked to generate nouns and verbs in the following semantic categories: animals, things you can buy in a store, and things that people do. Their responses were analyzed for total number of words, number of word clusters, and frequency of switching. Results: The results were as follows. First, while the total number of noun generated by 6-year-olds was greater than that by 4-year-olds, with verbs there was no difference. Second, while the numbers of word clusters and frequency of switching when generating nouns were greater among the 6-year-olds than among the 4-year-olds, with verbs there was no difference. Conclusions: In the speech generated by these preschool age children, the proportion of nouns, amount of different vocabulary, and number of word clusters all increased with age. However, in the case of verbs, which were used comparatively less, it was observed that their proportion among the words generated decreased, and the frequency of verbs in clusters of 2 more showed no difference with age.
