The purpose of this study is to analyze the unexpectedness of the death of Gertrude, the main female character in Hamlet. Gertrude is a king’s wife in Denmark, and the cause of all the conflicts in the play, but her actions are not given the logical causes that the major dramatic character necessarily has. Gertrude plays a repentant mother to son, Hamlet, as well as a faithful wife to the new husband, king Claudius. However, there is no recognizable explanation for this duality in the play. And her accidental death can be represented as the death of a woman who disrupts the patriarchal order in Denmark and as an object that must be eliminated in the process of rebuilding that value. The death of Gertrude is like the ‘deus ex the machina’ in Greek tragedy which, without any logical context, suddenly appears to solve the whole conflicts at the end of the play. The task of analyzing Gertrude’s death, which has been overshadowed by the theme of revenge of a young prince in trouble, will have the significance of affirming the status of women who are sacrificed and eternally engraved as a victim of the patriarchal features of Hamlet.
