William Shakespeare’s Hamlet and Eugene O’Neill’s Mourning Becomes Electra have such common elements as the nemesis of betrayal and revenge, the past’s control of the present, and the confrontation and death. ‘Force behind’ is Fate, God, our biological past creating our present, and Mystery. And it is an emphasized fate’s orientation of the ancient Greek times, the Renaissance, and the modern era of naturalism. In Hamlet, the causes of ‘Force behind’ are Claudius’ murder of the late king and the late king’s request of revenge to Claudius. It is realized in both Denmark’s awe-inspiring atmosphere and Hamlet’s black dress. It acts as Hamlet’s confirmation of the truth of the Ghost’s saying through a play within a play, and Claudius’ and Laertes’ conspiracy to remove Hamlet. Its effect is the death of Gertrude, Claudius, Latertes, and Hamlet. And in Mourning Becomes Electra, the causes of ‘Force behind’ are Abe’s banishment of his younger brother David and his sister-in-law Marie, Ezra’s refusal of helping hand to Marie, Ezra’s sexual tyranny and self-righteousness to his wife Christine, Christine’s serious heart-ache caused by her husband Ezra and her daughter Lavinia by letting her son Orin’s going to war, and Lavinia’s Electra Complex and Orin’s Oedipus Complex. It is realized in Mannon house like an incongruous white mask, Mannons’ mask-like face, and Lavinia’s black dress. It acts as Christine’s and Brant’s conspiracy to kill Ezra by poison. Its effect is the death of Ezra, Brant, Christine, Orin, and Lavinia’s self-confinement. The real and ultimate liberation from ‘Force behind,’ namely salvation is self-affirmation, self-liberation, and self-conquest by oneself through the cold and hard recognition to it and the struggle against it, and Shakespeare and O’Neill express ‘Force behind’ as a core theme in their Hamlet and Mourning Becomes Electra.
