This study examines the usage patterns of the word away among native English speakers and Korean learners, categorizing its use into three contexts: Distance, Continuation, and Figurative Use. Based on the analysis of 500 sentences from each group, the findings reveal significant differences. Native speakers display a relatively balanced distribution across all categories, whereas Korean learners show a marked preference for Distance and underutilize the word in Continuation and Figurative contexts. A chi-square test of independence confirmed these differences, with Cramér’s V indicating an effect size. Based on these findings, the study underscores the need for targeted instructional strategies to enhance learners’ familiarity with figurative and continuous action uses of away, thereby supporting a more nuanced command of the English language.
