This study empirically defines the bicycle daily activity space in Seoul by analyzing independent bicycle usage patterns, focusing on round-trip travel using the public bike-sharing system, Ddareungi. Traditional research often overlooks the distinction between bicycles used as transportation mode and as leisure. To address this gap, we analyzed 386,272 rental records from 2,496 Ddareungi stations collected in October 2021. We categorized trips into transportation and leisure by examining temporary parking data and distinguishing between movement and stop durations via trajectory analysis. Our findings reveal that bicycles are used more frequently for transportation (53.7%) than for leisure (46.3%). The average trip duration was 34.7 minutes for transportation and 33.9 minutes for leisure. Using k-means clustering, we identified five types of bicycle daily activity spaces, highlighting regional differences in usage patterns. Areas with well-connected bicycle infrastructure showed higher usage rates, indicating the significance of urban environment and infrastructure in promoting bicycle use. These insights provide practical data for urban planners and policymakers to incorporate bicycle daily activity spaces into transportation infrastructure design. While limitation exist, such as differences between public and private bicycle usage, the study contributes to understanding urban bicycle use and supports sustainable urban transportation strategies.
